LONDON: A British millionaire has been fined hundreds of pounds for assaulting his wife and her lover after he caught them in bed together.

A Blackpool magistrates’ court has found Douglas St. George Smith guilty of hitting the duo and ordered him to pay 1,200 pounds, 800 as fine, 200 as compensation to his wife and judicial costs of 400 pounds, media reported here on Saturday.

The 48-year-old millionaire denied hitting his wife, Karen, but admitted punching Peter Acton, his horse vet, last year after he found them “lying together” in bed, she topless and him in boxer shorts, at the latter’s residence.

However, Karen has refuted all the allegations and told the court that she and Acton were just “good friends”. “We were friends and are still friends. We were not in a relationship. I was not semi-naked and without my bra.

“What happened that night frightened me. I had told my husband I wanted a divorce and that I had kissed a man in a night club but had not told him who it was,” she said and claimed that her husband had assaulted her, causing injuries. Smith, who owns tracts of land in and around Blackpool, met his wife eight years ago.

He claimed before the court that he had proposed to her on a beach dressed in a suit of armour and mounted on a white charger. She accepted and moved into his luxury home, complete with stabling and a tennis court, in Hambleton, Lancashire, he said, alleging that after eight years he was stunned to catch her on bed with his vet.
